Congress-led UPA is expected to come to power again as early election trends reveal that UPA has won 53 seats and is leading in 202 seats. On the other hand, BJP-led NDA has clinched 33 seats and is ahead in 127 constituencies. It is expected that UPA will win around 254 seats, just 18 short of the halfway mark needed to form a government. The third Front has won 11 seats and is leading in 58 constituencies. With early results favoring UPA, celebrations began outside the Congress headquarters in the capital.
According to Congress spokesperson and Science and Technology Minister Kapil Sibal the people of the country has voted for a stable government and hence chosen Congress-led UPA. He feels that the success has come because of the leaderships of party president Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.
Among the prominent candidates set to get elected to the 15th Lok Sabha are Union Ministers Kamal Nath and Renuka Chowdhury of the Congress, BJP president Rajnath Singh and Janata Dal-Secular leader and former prime minister H D Deve Gowda.
Former actress and Samajwadi Party's Jaya Prada has been trailing in Rampur in Uttar Pradesh while Union Home Minister P Chidamabaram is expected to lose in Sivaganga in Tamil Nadu. MDMK leader Vaiko, a strong supporter of Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers, is also expected to experience defeat.
