Researchers approach towards developing a zillion times faster computer is to use ultra fast lasers to manipulate arrays of semiconductor quantum dots. These arrays contain one electron each. Accordingly, quantum logic gates are formed by quantum mechanical interactions between the dots.
Currently, the fastest quantum computer bit or the qubit is zillions of times faster than the conventional bit which could be able to make computers similarly faster. The unique character of qubit - whereas a conventional bit can be a 0 or a 1, a qubit can be both at the same time. The issue with scientists is they couldn't stabilize that duality.
Ultimately, with the help of their ability to represent multiple states simultaneously, quantum computers would be able to calculate dramatically faster and with much smaller computers. Along with faster calculations, these would be able to improve computer security.
Duncan Steel, a physics professor on the innovation commented that the National Security Agency has said that based on present technology, there is about a 20-year window of security. Elaborating it further he said that quantum computers will let one develop a code that would be impossible to crack with a conventional computer.
