Comprehensive Cancer Centre has uncovered the clues for the development of different cancers in those who suffer from AIDS.

According to Dr. Dirk Dittmer of the UNC’s School of Medicine, the Kaposi Sarcoma is associated with the Herpes Virus, KSHV, and is also present in those cells which transcribe the microRNAs from the virus along with all the tumour cells. The microRNAs are actually small molecules which regulate the expression of the genes.

The research team also had clinicians from Beth Israel Hospital, the University of Miami and the Federal University in Bahia, Brazil. This research tem hypothesized that the viruses which cause cancer by the attacking the cells and inducing mutations of the microRNAs of the cells are responsible for slowing down the uncontrolled multiplication of the cancerous cells.

The research team examined the samples of the tissues which were provided after taking consent from those people who were suffering from Kaosi’s sarcoma. In the examination, they found out that the specific microRNA biomarkers have the capability of identifying the stages of progression of tumour accurately.

According to the research team, the microRNAs are a new class of cancer makers and knowing the mechanisms of how the viruses attack the cells, leading to cancer, can actually help in the prevention as well as treatment of cancer. They also mentioned that specific inhibitors of these viral genes can also be developed.
