While addressing the nation from the Red Fort on the occasion of Independence Day, PM Manmohan Singh said that climate change can cause severe harm to the country. Thus, long-term solutions are required to deal with the threat. He further justified his words by saying that climate change can disrupt economy in numerous ways. Like the prehistoric Himalayas, in case the Himalayan glaciers recede, the water flow in the rivers will go down. It can lead to submersion of some coastal areas of India.
Likewise, the monsoon pattern might change. Thus, the nation requires long term solutions to such threats. The PM underlined the menace and said that a national consensus is also required for the government to develop effective policies to deal with such problems. Besides, he said that it should be the responsibility of each and every person to make the best possible use of natural resources and keep the carbon emissions within reasonable limits to protect the environment.
