Protecting the houses from floods is a major problem in Holland, as a major part of the country is below sea level. Now, architects have found a way to fix the problem by building the Citadel - the world’s first floating apartment complex.
Seasickness will not be present as the complex will be float on a massive concrete foundation designed to remain perfectly stable as the water rises and falls.
Designed by Koen Olthius of Waterstudio in the Netherlands, the Citadel will have 60 luxury apartments, a parking garage, a floating roadway, and boat docks. Each apartment will naturally have waterfront views via a garden terrace, and greenhouses will be interspersed throughout.
But the coolest feature of the Citadel is its cooling system - submerged pipes will pump water throughout the structure to cool it, reducing its energy use by 25% compared to a conventional building.
