United States Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) has granted the approval to India pharmaceutical firm, Cipla for Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate tablets. The drug is used in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults.  The company will be allowed to sell the drug in tablet form in dosages of 300 milligram under the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief program.
 
Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate tablets are the generic version of Gilead Sciences Inc.'s (GILD) truvada. The Indian company produces low-cost anti-AIDS drugs for HIV-positive patients in developing countries. Apart from anti-HIV drugs, Cipla makes drugs to treat cardiovascular disease, arthritis, diabetes, weight control, depression and many other health conditions. Cipla's products are marketed in over 200 countries of the world. 

Over the years, the Indian pharmaceutical company has attained the status of a leader in manufacturing antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) to treat AIDS. The company produces hundreds of generic medications including atorvastatin, amlodipine, fluoxetine, venlafaxine hydrochloride and metformin.
