Cesar Cielo Filho, surprisingly, emerged from a wall of white water to grab the gold medal in the Men's 50m Freestyle final at the National Aquatics Center in Beijing. Filho finished in an Olympic record time of 21.30 seconds. A day before he won the bronze in the Men’s 100 Freestyle. Amaury Leveaux of France secured the silver medal in a time of 21.45 sec.
French Alain Bernard, the 100m Freestyle champion and the second fastest qualifier for the final, managed to get the bronze medal in a time of 21.49sec. Eamon Sullivan of Australia, a tough challenger to Bernard, placed sixth in the finals with a time of 21.65sec, while Roland Schoeman of South Africa, Athens 2004 bronze medalist, came in seventh place.
