Chinese President Hu Jintao had to face sharp criticism on Thursday, May 8, 2008 over China’s stand in Tibet outside an elite Tokyo University. The Chinese President is on a five day visit to Japan, a first in last ten years by a Chinese head. The Chinese President inside the Waseda University urged the two nations, amidst student and scholars gathering to put their bitter wartime history behind. In the meanwhile, hundreds of protestors sharply criticized China’s stand on Tibet and shouted slogans against the Chinese head.

President Hu Jintao, in his 30 minute address at Waseda University, made significant remarks to ease the tension between the two Asian giants, owing to their bitter historical past. The President mentioned Japan’s ‘militaristic invasion of China’ but also stressed that the same should no longer be dwelled upon. But as Hu spoke, pro-Tibet protestors gathered in large numbers outside the University. Minor scuffles also broke out, which led the officers to imprison certain protestors. However, despite such protesting incidents, Hu’s visit to Japan is believed to be largely successful which will eventually result in greater ties and cooperation between the two nations.
