China is apprehensive that Indo-US nuke deal would threaten international nuclear non-proliferation. According to an article published in China newspaper, 'the People's Daily' there are many major issues concerning the US-India nuclear deal. The article shows apprehension in the mind of China about the motives of the deal vis-à-vis nuclear safeguards.
The article declares that the issue concerning India's ability to provide the necessary safeguards is far from satisfactory. Interestingly, China is not among the six nations that have raised objections in the NSG meeting, and that is a major concern for India; now, as it would add more voices against the deal. The protesting voice coming from Beijing could delay conclusion of the nuke deal too.
The newspaper says that whether the deal is motivated by geopolitical considerations or commercial interests, the US-India nuclear agreement has constituted a major blow to the international non-proliferation regime. It further writes that irrespective of the fate of the US-India nuclear agreement, the US's multiple standards on non-proliferation issues have met with a skeptical world.
