China and Taiwan have agreed upon for regular flights from each other’s lands. This landmark deal is a great breakthrough for both the nations as they have strain relationship since 1949. These regular flights would be weekend charter; nevertheless a big step towards bringing normalcy in relation between these two archrival nations. This time politics did not come in way and practical need and demand of people was kept up in agenda during negotiation.
Earlier a Taiwan delegation met their Chinese counterparts in Beijing and showed its willingness for regular flights between the two nations. According to the reports published in Taiwan media, the first flights would start on July 4, and that the first Chinese tour groups to Taiwan would start arriving from July 18. Speculations are made that this deal will help bringing more tourists from China to Taiwan and that in consequence will boost the island’s economy.
Political analysts view this deal as a change of stance in Taiwan’s foreign policy. Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou wants good relationship with Asian superpower and does not want to miss the growth bus. He is hopeful that opening of direct flights will save time and money for the hundreds of thousands of Taiwanese who live and work in China and now have to fly via Hong Kong or Macau.
