Top officials of China monitoring the recovery work of the massive quake that hit the country on 12 May have been quoted by the state run Xinhua News Agency as saying that efforts to provide relief to the over 12 million victims stands at a very ‘critical point’. Vice Premier Li Keqiang overseeing relief operations in the Sichuan province of China asked rescue workers to step up endeavor after a 35-year-old woman was pulled out alive from the rubble nine days after the natural disaster. 
 
The recent earthquake is being deemed as the most violent one that hit the country in the last 32 years as it has left about 41,353 dead, demolished 5.4 million homes apart from damaging another 21.4 million. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has stated that the country is handling an ‘arduous’ job restoring social order and production in the disaster region. The Chinese Premier has stated that China, due to this earthquake, has undergone losses to the tune of 67 billion yuan or $9.6 billion.  
 
The government of China has set up a 70 billion yuan fund in order to carry on its earthquake recovery project. But in order to put together such a massive amount of money, the government departments have been asked to cut their expenditure by five per cent. Endeavor is also being made to keep diseases from breaking out after gangrene cases were diagnosed in 274,683 injured people.
