As per the spiritual leader of the Tibetans, Dalai Lama who is currently in the United States to address a conference on compassion, the representatives of the Chinese and his own are holding talks through private channels. ‘Some efforts’ are under way, the exiled Tibetan Buddhist leader is heard to have remarked recently in US. This negotiation is the fallout of the western leaders’ requesting China to do so following massive protests by Tibetans against the Chinese across Tibet and elsewhere.

The Dalai Lama did not divulge the details of the negotiations, pointing out that he is not directly involved in them. The Chinese government, on the other hand, has accused His Holiness of orchestrating the protests and violence. They also accused him of being a separatist, but these claims have been refuted by the Dalai Lama. The Tibetan spiritual leader has asked China to open Tibet to the media so that the world could see what was going on there. He remarked that President Hu's push for a harmonious society showed the ruling Communist Party was in a state of transformation.

Dalai Lama repeated once again that he fully supported Beijing’s hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games, but adding that the critics of China be permitted to protest peacefully during the torch relay. The Dalai Lama also threatened once again that he would give up his position as the head of the Tibetan government in exile incase the violence in Tibet gets out of control. He accepted the fact that few Tibetans have criticized him for seeking autonomy for Tibet within China, rather than full independence. His critics charged it has produced nothing.
