China has secretly built a nuclear submarine base, which can pose a major threat to the security of Asian countries and American interest in the region. The underground submarine base has the capacity to conceal at least twenty vessels. The huge underground submarine base is located on the southern tip of the Hainan Island. Jane’s Intelligence Review, a renowned defense periodical obtained satellite images of the base which resulted in first confirming the existence of the nuclear submarine base.
One of the images at the underground nuclear submarine base shows a Chinese 094 nuclear submarine at the base. Pentagon claims that it knew about the development in the South China Sea from past two years. The satellite images also reveal a large harbor and around 11 massive tunnels, with each entrance carved into the hill-side, stretching to a height of about 60 feet.
The secret base known as ‘Sanya’ can pose a significant challenge to US Navy dominance in the region and countries banking along the South China Sea. Defense experts have revealed that the base feeds so deep into the Sea waters that the submarines can launch missiles without having to surface, making it difficult to detect them from the sky.
