The Chinese government has appealed the international community to provide it tents in order to house the survivors of the deadly earthquake that hit the country the previous week. The request for tents comes following the recent weather forecast which predicted that the disaster zone may witness rainfall. Among all the aid pouring into the country, the United Nations Children's Fund, Unicef has provided 16 metric tons of tents along with other important items for quake victims.
The Unicef relief supplies were flown in by two military planes that touched down in Chengdu on Monday 19 May. Chengdu is situated around 1,500 kilometers or 932 miles from Beijing. In a well-known China daily, Pang Chenmin, an official of the Ministry of Civil Affairs remarked that about one million families have lost their homes in the quake and require a roof over their heads. The total death toll recorded in China till date from the recent 7.9-magnitude earthquake, the most massive in the last 32 years, is 34,073 people with 245,108 injured.
