The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation is planning an IT Investment Region in Chennai that will see an investment of Rs 25,000 Crore going into it.  Spanning an area of 1,400 sq km area or 3.5 lakh acres to Chennai's south-west, the proposed ITIR will lie between the Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) and the Bangalore Highway.

Talking about this project, a TIDCO official said, 'It is an ambitious project aimed at dispersing the infrastructure evenly by creating plug and play facilities for investors across the ITIR over the next five years.' He added that this ITIR project will be both private-public investment, but a bulk of its will come from the government.

He underscored that the actual investment on the project could even be much higher. 'We expect corporates to move in with an investment of Rs 4 lakh crore into the ITIR, which would generate roughly 4 lakh additional jobs,' the TIDCO official said. There will also be four new railway stations for this region -  Taramani-Mahabalipuram (along the Buckingham Canal), Chennai-Kancheepuram (along NH 4), Chengelpet-Sriperumbudur and Kancheepuram-OMR.
