MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings showed some excellent display of batting and bowling to outperform Deccan Chargers by 78 runs in an IPL encounter held at East London on Monday (May 4). Put in to bat first, Super Kings amassed a total of 178 runs by losing three wickets in 20 overs. In form Australian hard-hitting batsman, Mathew Hayden blasted 43 runs in 26 deliveries with five fours and three sixes. But the skipper Dhoni stole the show with his blistering innings of 58 runs off 37 balls, hitting six fours and one six. He was greatly assisted by Murali Vijay (61 off 41).
Chasing a mammoth target of 179 to win, Deccan Chargers lost their three batsmen, Adam Gilchrist, Herschelle Gibbs and VVS Laxman for duck and the scoreboard read 1-3 after 2.2 overs. However, the arrival of West Indian batsman Dwayne Smith brought some respite for the Chargers. With luck favouring his side, Smith played a brisk innings of 49 runs off 23 balls to rescue his team. He and Rohit Sharma (21) put on to a partnership of 72 runs in 36 balls.
But the 28-year-old spinner from Super Kings, Shadab Jakati turned the match in favour of his team by dismissing both Sharma and Smith. Jakati also picked up Venugopal Rao and Ryan Harris to end up with figures of 4-22 in four overs. Muttiah Muralitharan got two wickets by conceding 11 runs. The Hyderabad team was bowled out for 100 runs in 14.4 overs.
