Tata Motors' ambitious project 'Nano', India’s cheapest car, will start rolling out from Sanand plant in Gujarat by 2010. Tata's Nano plant was shifted to Sanand in Gujarat from Singur (West Bengal) after Trinamool Congress chief Mamta Banerjee and local farmers did not allow the plant to function because of land acquisition problems.
The movement led by Ms Banerjee caused serious damage to Tata Motor’s plant in Singur and adversely affected its schedule. Earlier, Tata Motors had planned to launch its 1 lakh dream car in October 2008. But it has not been able to launch the car so far due to the delay caused by closure of its Singur plant.
Nano car for the first time was showcased at the Auto Expo early last year in New Delhi. Since its announcement by Tata Motors, Nano had caught the imagination of the people. When people first heard about Rs 1 lakh car they thought that it may well look more like an auto rickshaw than a car. Apparently even a CNG auto rickshaw in Delhi cost more than Rs 3 Lakh.
