The government on Monday issued a showcause notice to TV news channel India TV for telecasting a vulgar MMS featuring the victim of Noida twin murder, Aarushi Talwar. The information and broadcasting ministry (I&B), found the content obscene, defamatory and denigrating of children and against good taste and decency.
The TV news channel has been given fifteen days to reply to the notice and could even face a temporary ban. More action is also likely against other TV channels and a production house. Aarushi’s mother, Mrs. Nupur Talwar has also lodged a strong protest with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) against television channels and a production house.
The UP police had alleged that the fourteen year old Aarushi was having an affair with the family servant Hemraj. These comments had earned the ire of not only social organizations but also women and child development minister Renuka Chowdhury, who had demanded that the police official using such loose language be immediately suspended. On Monday, Mrs. Chowdhury remarked that it is unfortunate that the murder is being exploited for commercial gain and said that she would take up the matter with her I&B counterpart.
