Chandigarh will get its first drug de-addiction centre in the month of June. The new drug de-addition centre will come up in the Government Press building in Sector 18 and it will be inaugurated by the administrator of the union territory, Gen S F Rodrigues (Retd). The proposed centre will have 12 beds. After opening the first drug de-addiction centre, the administration will built another centre in Sector 16.
While submitting his statement to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, the Senior Standing Counsel Advocate of Chandigarh, Anupam Gupta informed that the administration is very keen to tackle the menace of drug addiction in the city. Earlier the court had taken a strong stand and criticised the decision of the Punjab government to close down drug de-addiction centres. According to justice Rajive Bhalla, the people in Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh use different types of narcotics and the number of drug addiction is rising at an alarming rate.
Justice Rajive Bhalla said that the condition will become serious if the governments and civil society did not come forward to stop this menace. According to Dr B S Chavan, head of psychiatry department, GMCH-32, the schoolchildren and college students of the city use injections having same needle that exposes them to the danger of HIV. B S Chavan welcomed the setting up of drug de-addiction centre in Chandigarh and appealed to build more such centres.
