The import of CDMA mobile phones, which do not contain the unique serial number, has been banned in India. The unique serial number is a provision which helps in keeping track of the users.

"Import of CDMA mobile phones without Electronic Serial Number(ESN), Mobile Equipment Identifier (MEID) or with all zeroes as ESN/MEID is prohibited with immediate effect," the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said in a notification issued  on Friday.

India had enforced a ban on the import of GSM mobile phones which lacked the unique international mobile equipment identity number after the concerns related to usage of such phones by terrorists were raised.
