CBSE Board, in the process of introducing grading system for evaluating its students, has mentioned that the attitude of the student towards teachers, classmates, school programmes and the environment will be graded while grading the academics and extra-curricular activities. But people are not very comfortable with this idea as they feel teachers will never get to know a student in-depth if he or she is handling a class of fifty plus students. There are others who feel that grading the attitudes will ensure that students get rid of their wrong thinking.
At a meeting of CBSE principals from across the country held in Delhi, many expressed their reservations on the matter.
‘‘A number of principals felt that attitudes were difficult to measure. They felt that there was the danger of bias, unless data was collected scientifically,’’ said Avnita Bir, principal of R N Podar School, Santa Cruz. She mentioned that the grading of a student is a team work, with the students being graded between A+ and B for attitudes and values whereas social, emotional and thinking skills will have a 5-pomit grading, with grades between A+ and C.
People have mentioned that while attitudes can be measured as favourable and unfavourable, allocating grades is not a feasible option.
Psychiatrist Dr Nirmala mentions that any area that is graded is taken seriously. ‘‘Unless you grade attitude, people may not pay much attention to it. At a time when there is a deterioration in student’s attitude ... grading attitude may get parents and students to take it more seriously,’’ said Rao.
