Capt Amarinder Singh on Wednesday, September 10, 2008, was expelled from the Punjab Assembly, which thereafter requested the Election Commission (EC) to announce his Patiala seat vacant. This happened after Amarinder Singh was accused by a special House committee of being involved in a land scam on Friday (September 5). Upon being expelled, Amarinder Singh said that he will challenge the move in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.

Furthermore, the state Vigilance Bureau has been asked by the Assembly to register FIRs against Singh as well as three others. The status report is to be placed within two months before Speaker Nirmal Singh Kahlon. On Friday (September 5), the former Punjab CM Amarinder Singh, his local government minister Chaudhary Jagjit Singh, his housing minister late Raghunath Sahai Puri and the then Amritsar Improvement Trust chairman Jugal Kishore Sharma were accused of permitting 32.10 acres of the Trust's land to a private firm.
