According to a new study, candle light dinner can trigger cancer due to the pollutants that are emitted during the burning of candles.

According to the research, the paraffin wax formed due to the burning of candles can emit human carcinogens which are harmful, along with other pollutants. These pollutants comprise of chemicals like toluene and benzene which can trigger cancer.

According to the study, the risk of persons having candle light dinner in closed room is higher when compared to rooms with open windows, as open windows can help in reducing the pollution to a great extent.

The study has been presented at the 238th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS).

Amid Hamidi, Ph.D, who was part of the study, said: "An occasional paraffin candle and its emissions will not likely affect you.

"But lighting many paraffin candles every day for years or lighting them frequently in an un-ventilated bathroom around a tub, for example, may cause problems."

According to him, people suffering from indoor allergy are more prone to development of cancer under such conditions as they display higher reactivity to the pollutants released due to the burning of candles.

But Hamidi and R. Massoudi Ph.D. have added that candles made from soy or bee wax are expensive, but safer option as the harmful pollutants are not emitted by these types of candles.
