The proposed modification of the Trade Marks Amendment Bill, 2007 has been approved by the Union Cabinet. Media report says that changes will be made in the bill according to the recommendations contained in the report of the department related parliamentary standing committee on commerce. After the modification, the bill will offer protection to the Indian trade marks in designated member countries. The protection of trade marks will encourage transfer of technology through trade mark licensing and franchising. This will promote overall business confidence in Indian IPR system globally.
The Trade Marks Amendment Bill was approved by the cabinet on February 8, 2007. The bill was introduced in the Lok Sabha on August 23, 2007. After that, it was referred to the department related parliamentary standing committee on commerce on October 1, 2007. The committee submitted its report to the both the houses of Parliament on March 19 this year. The amendments in the bill are supposed to be executed by following the recommendations of this report of the committee.
