US President George W Bush has condemned Russia for recognizing the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. President Bush said that Abkhazia and South Ossetia are well within the internationally recognized borders of Georgia, and they must remain so. Earlier, Russian president Medvedev rebuffed a plea by Bush not to recognize the two provinces as independence states.
George Bush referring to August 11 ceasefire agreement between French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and Russia said that US expects Russia to live up to its international commitments, reconsider this irresponsible decision, and follow the approach set out in the agreement signed. Reportedly, in consequence US may think of scrapping a civil nuclear cooperation agreement with Russia.
Bush showing his disappointment said that the irresponsible decision by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev tramples on numerous UN Security Council resolutions previously supported by Moscow and violates Georgian sovereignty. In similar response, spokesman Tony Fratto from Crawford in Texas said that this is not an act that will be recognized by the UN Security Council. It will be dead on arrival.
