Bush showing his symbolic anger on Russian attack on Georgia has scrapped proposed US-Russia nuke deal. Earlier, Bush had sent the agreement to Congress for approval in May, and now he himself has pulled it back. Announcing the decision on Bush's behalf, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that US has taken the decision with regret.
The decision is a sign of Cold War-like situation where Bush determined the extensive and unprecedented cooperation spelled out in the agreement 'no longer in the national security interests' of the United States. Spokesman Sean McCormack said that given the current environment, the time is not right for nuke agreement.
Further he said that the US administration has had some deep concerns about Russia behavior' for some time. Fate of the deal was almost decided when the disastrous Georgia-Russia war took place; some lawmakers started asking Bush to pull it to show Moscow its actions wouldn't be tolerated. The intimation in regard to scrapping of the nuke deal was send to the U.S. embassy in Moscow last week.
