Investigators at the US-based Centre for Injury Research and Policy, following a study conducted by them, have suggested that parents better refrain from making their kids sleep on bunk beds as they are unsafe. The study states that having a bunk bed may be a child’s favorite wish, but they are not really safe and that this finding especially applies to kids less than six years of age.

The study revealed that accidents such as kids tumbling off from the bunk bed is quite common and that most fell head first due to their higher centre of gravity. Further on, the study report added that kids below three years had 40 per cent more chances to get head injuries. Facerations, contusions, abrasions and fractures were some common injuries found to be associated with bunk bed accidents.

The study pointed out that bunk-bed related accident most often happened among males and over half of the children surveyed in this category were found to be below six years of age. The body parts of the children that usually gets injured are face, neck and head. The research for this study was on for 16 years, at the end of which it was concluded that an estimated 572,580 bunk bed-related injuries had happened in the US within this time frame.
