BSNL is negotiating with private telecommunication companies for roaming agreement where subscribers of private operators would be able to roam under BSNL's network all across India. Currently, only subscribers of state-owned MTNL are allowed to roam on BSNL’s networks. Evidently, MTNL services are limited to the metros of Delhi and Mumbai only.

According to a BSNL source, the company is evaluating the proposals from private operators as it is willing to share its networks with them for commercial roaming agreements. The source said that if BSNL can do it with MTNL, it can replicate the same with other players too. BSNL is expecting for a successful deal soon with private service providers.

Reportedly, private operators will have to pay an amount of Rs 750 crore annually to BSNL under the agreement. However, the obstacle that can come in concluding any agreement is BSNL wants a higher revenue sharing between operators for roaming customers, over and above the fixed 30-paise-per-minute charge the regulator has granted the operator on whose network the roaming call is terminated.
