The state-owned telecom company Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) on Thursday (February 26) introduced wireless broadband services in Gujarat, in association with US-based WiMax solutions provider SOMA networks. According to a statement of BSNL, the wireless broadband facility will heighten the expansion of broadband connections in India. Government has planned to install 20 million broadband connections by 2010.
While informing about the wireless broadband service, BSNL said that Gujarat Industrial Development Corp (GIDC) is the first entity to reap the benefits of such sort of services. GIDC will avail the wireless service to industries housed in their estates, in addition to using it in their own administrative offices. The state-run telecom operator has tied up with SOMA networks for WiMax broadband services in Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Andhra Pradesh.
BSNL said that the company is extremely happy that its wireless broadband project will be experienced first by the people of Gujarat. BSNL is expected install 9,000 km of optical fiber network to increase its broadband footprint in Gujarat. Apart from this, the company aims to have around one million subscribers of its wireless broadband services in Gujarat by a period of next five years. Meanwhile, US-based WiMax solutions provider SOMA networks has announced to invest around USD 200 million (Rs 1000 crore approx.) for rolling out mobile WiMax system in India.
