For the first time, scientists have found a major breakthrough in AIDS vaccine. This was a part of the largest ever HIV vaccine tryout in the world involving 16,000 volunteers. Research showed that, it could cut the risk of infection in AIDS.
The research showed that, out of 16,000 persons, over a third of the 8,000 people vaccinated, got an improved result.
However, previously two such large trials failed in 2007.
The news was released by the Thailand Ministry of Public Health after joint study of the US and Thai researchers came to a conclusion.
"The vaccine has a 31.2% efficacy in reducing the risk of HIV infection," the researchers expressed at a press conference in Bangkok.
"The outcome represents a breakthrough in HIV vaccine development because for the first time ever there is evidence that HIV vaccine has preventative efficacy,” a spokesman told.
The World Health Organisation and UNAIDS jointly said, the results "instilled new hope" in the fight against HIV.
