The top energy official of Brazil on Friday, September 12, 2008 informed that the country is contemplating to set up 50 to 60 nuclear power plants in the coming half century. The official explained that the political turmoil going on in Bolivia has forced them to take measures to end their dependence on that country for the supply of natural gas.
It was informed by the Mines and Energy Minister Edison Lobao that the building of the nuclear power plants may begin by as soon as April next year. 'The plan aims to reduce dependence on other energy sources. The problem in Bolivia is more proof that we have to continue with our nuclear program,' the minister said.
Of late, the Bolivian economy has hit a snag due to street protests and invasions of energy installations causing the shipment of natural gas to Brazil to get stalled for a while. Brazil gets nearly 50 per cent of its natural gas from Bolivia and is, therefore, apprehending energy shortages. Brazil has two nuclear power plants - Angra 1 and Angra 2 and the third Angra 3 is presently under construction.
