Legendary film maker BR Chopra, who has given several masterpieces to Indian cinema, was conferred the Phalke Ratna award on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. The Phalke Ratna award has been instituted by the Dadasaheb Phalke Academy, and was given to BR Chopra on the occasion of Phalke Jayanti in Mumbai. The Phalke Ratna award has earlier been conferred on film personalities like Late Sunil Dutt in 2005 and Dilip Kumar in 2007.
 
The producer director BR Chopra rightfully deserved the honor, owing to his immense contribution for the growth and development of Indian cinema by making films like ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Gumraah’, ‘Ek Hi Rasta’, ‘Baghbaan’ and ‘Kanoon’ among others. The BR Chopra banners emerged way back in 1955 and since then the filmmaker has spent his entire life in making meaningful cinema. BR Chopra is known to pick up socially relevant themes for his films, which is clearly reflective in his movies. Also honored at the event was actor Rajesh Khanna, who received the Dadasaheb Phalke Golden Actor award.
