Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT) may raise qualifying criteria keeping in mind the close to nil criteria and the poor quality of intake the university has been having.
The qualifying criteria for engineering courses was a certain percentage in plus 2 and then a qualifying performance in the JEE exam. But this seems far from enough to select capable students for the course. The JEE qualifies almost every student who appears. So the situation comes down to the plain fact that all students clearing their plus 2 are eligible to apply for the professional course as the JEE gives ranks to all students who appear.
A BPUT source said, “The technical committee is seriously considering to suggest raising the bar of the qualifying score.”
The university however does not have full control over the situation or changes that have to be brought about. The Policy Planning Body (PPB) of the State Government is the one entitled to take a decision university could definitely press on the issue.
The changes in qualifying criteria are likely to be aimed at combining the plus 2 and JEE result such that a combined analysis of plus 2 and JEE rank would decide the eligibility of a student. A cut off is also likely to be set for the same.
The Orissa Private Engineering Colleges Association (OPECA) too feels the same way. Binod Dash, honorary secretary of the association said, “Three years ago, we suggested that equal weightage be given to Plus Two performance and JEE ranks during counselling. This will help improve the intake and help the cause of the students as well the colleges but the Government is yet to take a call.”
