Boris Johnson swept the polls for London’s Mayoral elections on Friday, May 2, 2008 to become the Mayor of London. Boris defeated Ken Livingstone, who had been reigning at the City Hall from past eight years. Johnson is already a household name in the city of London and is pretty famous for his clownish gaffes and witty soundbites. His appointment has in fact raised doubts in the mind of many, particularly in the run up to 2012 London Olympic Games.
Boris Johnson relatively lacks frontline experience in governance. However the Conservative candidate’s win over Ken Livingstone, the candidate from Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s ruling Labor party has given the latter’s party the worst defeat at polls in the last forty years. Boris in his Mayoral campaign targeted voters on the outskirts of London, who have been alienated in previous Mayoral elections owing to more prominence given to inner city issues. The challenge ahead of Boris Johnson is now to lead a major city of the world.
