Two bomb explosions, within a few hours of one another, in the deep south of Thailand on Saturday 17 May have killed one policeman and injured 14 other people, said police officials. South Thailand happens to be a zone where the local authorities have been busy battling a serious separatist rebellion. Sources inform that the first of the two blasts set off in a bustling night market place in the Narathiwat province, in which nine diners got injured.
Just a couple of hours later, a second bomb exploded in a car park adjoining a police station situated nearby the Pattani province. In this bomb explosion, a police man instantly died whereas five of his colleagues standing nearby suffered serious injuries. Over 3000 people have got killed ever since the separatist movement started in January 2004 in south Thailand. The southern part of Thailand was an independent Malay Muslim sultanate till chiefly Buddhist Thailand seized it in 1902 giving rise to unrest.
