German automobile giant, BMW has decided that it is not going to launch its premium small car Mini in India in 2009. BMW India President Peter Kronschnabl said that the Indian market is not viable for launching the car. However he also said that it doesn't mean that they have abandoned their plans for launching Mini in India.
It is to be noted that originally Mini was a British car brand which was bought over by BMW. Though Mini is of small size, still it carries the price tag almost equal to that of premium cars and enjoys an iconic status. The delay of Mini will help another German carmaker Volkswagen, which plans to launch its 'Beetle' model in India this year.
BMW had said earlier that if it launches Mini in India, it would be sold only in Delhi and Mumbai. However the delay is sure to dishearten people who were waiting to ride this premium small car.
