People who own Blackberry will now be able to indulge in a better browsing experience, as RIM has acquired Toronto-based Torch Mobile, which makes the Iris browser, to provide its Blackberry with a new, enhanced browser.
Iris is a fully featured, web-kit based browser for various platforms. This will enable Blackberry to face the tough competition put forward by iPhone, which is enabled with a full featured Safari browser.
The details of the deal have not yet been revealed by the RIM, which is based at Hamilton near Toronto. The employees of Torch Mobile have already joined the software development team of Blackberry.
The Toronto company in their statement said “It is excited to announce that our company has been acquired by Research In Motion (RIM), one of the most renowned mobile technology companies in the world.
"Our team of developers will join RIM's global organisation and will now be focused on utilizing our WebKit-based mobile browser expertise to contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the Blackberry platform”, said a source from Torch Mobile.
Torch Mobile will provide Blackberry smart phones with a better browsing platform from next year.
It is very essential for Blackberry to fix its browser soon, for expanding its customer base from corporate types to general users.
Currently, BlackBerry has a subscription base of about 29 million in about 150 countries. It has been rated as one among the world's 100 fastest-growing companies by Fortune magazine.
