For American business magnate Bill Gates, who is the chairman of software company Microsoft, June 27 2008 will be his last official day of work. After Gates’ retirement, three people will fill the void left behind in Microsoft which was co-founded by him and his friend Paul Allen in 1975. The job of Gates as chief software architect was being handled by Ray Ozzie, ever since he began heading his personally-bankrolled charity, The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Gate's chief research and strategy officer duties will be overseen by Craig Mundie, whereas Steve Ballmer, former Harvard classmate, will assume the post of CEO at the Seattle-based software colossus. It was after two years that Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard to create Microsoft, which emerged as a global powerhouse. Harvard and other prestigious universities later on conferred on Bill Gates honorary degrees. Gates will, however, continue to serve as the chairman of the Microsoft board of directors and its largest shareholder.
