Though way behind the top two telecom companies, Bharti Airtel of India is fourth largest telecom company in world in terms of customer base with 72.07 million subscribers by July, 2008. The first two are from China. While China Mobile has 414.5 million customers as on June 2008, China Unicom has customer base of 170.7 million. At third position is AT&T of US with 72.9 million in June this year.
The company operates in 23 telecom circles, and offers fixed and wireless teleservices with GSM technology. The customer base of Bharti includes mobile services, telemedia services and enterprises services. Interestingly enough the way Bharti is growing its customer base, it would not be tough for it to surpass AT&T which is marginally ahead of Bharti, and it could become third largest.
Manoj Kohli, CMD of the company, on the feat commented that company has achieved this milestone of being the largest integrated telecom company in the country, in customer terms. However, he considers customer delight as the benchmark for market leadership. He felt grateful towards customers who have been showing their faith on Airtel services.
