The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has named ace footballer Bhaichung Bhutia as the player of the year for 2008. When asked about the feeling of being the player of the year, the Indian striker said that it's an honour for him. According to Bhaichung Bhutia, it has been a very productive year for him. Bhutia led the Indian football team which won the AFC Challenge Cup title earlier this year.

The current captain of Indian football team, Bhaichung Bhutia hails from Sikkim. At club level, he represents Kolkata's Mohan Bagan. Bhutia had also won the player of the year title in 1996. The footballer was also invited to carry the Olympic torch but he declined the offer owing to Tibet issue.

During the AFC Challenge Cup, Bhaichung Bhutia scored twice in match against Turkmenistan. He was also selected as the most valuable player of the tournament. India's win in AFC tournament has allowed the country to qualify for Asia Cup football tournament after a long wait of 24 years.
