The volunteer corps was handed over the flag by Liu Qi, President of the BOCOG which officially marked the launch of the volunteer corps for the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics 2008. Vice President Xi Jinping urged the volunteers at the gathering to be ‘promoters of the Olympic spirit’ and to be the ‘representatives of China’s peaceful development image’. The gathering was attended by more than six thousand people. 
 
The Olympic Games and Paralympics which will run from August 8-24 and September 6-17 respectively will have 100,000 Games time volunteers, 400,000 city volunteers and more than one million social volunteers. The city volunteers have been designated locations across the Beijing city and will mainly help the overseas visitors to overcome the language barrier. The work of the social volunteers will only be to provide aid to the visitors at the community level.
