The Indian cricket board has increased its life insurance cover on its men and women cricketers' touring abroad following the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore. From now onwards, each player touring overseas will be insured for Rs 2.5 crore. Apart from it, each player will have a medi-claim cover of $ 25,000 under Overseas Mediclaim policy. All these decisions were taken at the working committee meeting of the BCCI in Mumbai.
According to media reports, the 15-member men's squad along with the support staff has been insured for a sum of Rs 62 crore while women's squad and its support staff have been insured for about Rs 50 crore. Now Indian players, who will tour the West Indies for a bilateral series, will be insured for the above-mentioned amount. The proposal to increase the volume of the insurance cover was first suggested by the International Cricket Council (ICC).
ICC's advisory body proposed the member boards to insure each player for at least $500,000 for every ICC tournament including World Cup, Champions Trophy, World T20, women's World Cup and the Junior World Cup. It is believed that BCCI's recent decision has come following the terror attack on Sri Lankan team. At least six Sri Lankan players were wounded when heavily armed terrorists attacked the team bus in Lahore on March 3, 2009. The attack on players shook the cricket world and Pakistan lost the rights to host the matches of forthcoming World Cup Cricket tournament.
