An Afghan journalist, Abdul Samad Rohani, working for the BBC was found shot dead on Sunday afternoon and has been buried yesterday. Rohani, a native Afghan and a BBC regional reporter had been working in Afghanistan’s southern Helmand province. He was abducted on Saturday and found murdered on Sunday afternoon at Lashkar Gah.

A spokesperson for the BBC revealed that Rohani’s body was found dumped in a cemetery and he was apparently shot in the head. The slain reporter, had reported for the BBC from Helmand, for the British broadcaster’s local Pashto-language service and worked as part of the same team as BBC Kabul correspondent Alastair Leithead. The Helmand province had witnessed some of the worst violence of Taliban led insurgency.

The Afghan government on Sunday night condemned the killing and said that he had been martyred for carrying out the holy job of reporting. Rohani’s body was taken from the provincial capital Lashkar Gah to his nearby home district of Marja, where he was buried in the village cemetery. The BBC paid tribute the courageous reporter saying his courage and dedication have been a key part of the BBC’s reporting from Helmand in recent years.
