The United Kingdom is going to see the launch of a free-to-see satellite TV as well as a radio service from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) and ITV. Freesat service will be available in nearly 98 per cent of UK homes. It is reported that the Freesat service will relay about 80 digital TV and radio channels and this would comprise high-definition programmes also.
The stated figure of channels to be relayed though this satellite service is expected to touch 200 by the end of the year 2008. Those wanting to avail this service will not have to pay a monthly fee, but will be required to make a one-off investment for buying a set-top box and installation. The BBC Trust has said Freesat is guaranteed to remain subscription-free. Emma Scott from Freesat informed BBC Radio 5 Live that only those homes will not get the service, which does not have a clear line of sight to the satellite apart from certain listed buildings.
