The iPlayer service provided by BBC is severely overloading the internet, according to internet service providers. The iPlayer service is an archive of programmes of BBC shown over the previous seven days. It is estimated that more than one million viewers are watching BBC programmes online ever week. The iPlayer service of BBC is generating about 3 to 5 percent of all internet traffic in Britain.
The internet service provider, Tiscali asserted that the BBC and other broad casters should ‘share the costs’ of increasing internet capacity to thwart the network coming under strain. The iPlayer service became an instant hit the moment it was launched last year on Christmas. The first episode of The Apprentice was watched more than 100,000 times via the internet. The month of March witnessed a 25 percent increase in requests to watch BBC programmes online since February.
