Mattel, the maker of the Barbie doll, has won $100 million in damages after a jury pronounced that the designer of the competitor Bratz dolls made the product while working at Mattel. The Barbie maker, however, is not happy with the jury's decision as it had demanded $2 billion in punitive damages from rival MGA, the maker of Bratz dolls. After the multi-ethnic Bratz dolls hit the market, the sale of Barbie dolls dipped by 21 per cent.

The jury had a hard time deciding whether the MGA should be charged for only the first four dolls created by designer Carter Bryant or the entire line of Bratz dolls. It was last month that the jury came to know that MGA had infringed the copyright of Mattel. What saved MGA from graver damage was its reasoning that its doll's success was mainly based on branding, packaging and smart development decisions.
