By defeating arch opponent Hillary Rodham Clinton in the Oregon primary, Barack Obama has gradually inched his way to the threshold of the Democratic presidential race. Obama’s success in Oregon has brought him within 100 delegates of the total which he requires to receive the prize at the party convention this summer. Presidential candidate hopeful Hillary Clinton too retaliated with a landslide victory in Kentucky this Tuesday 20 May, but her win holds little political significance in a contest that is clearly going Barack Obama’s way. Barack Obama remarked that Oregon’s contest had provided him a bulk of the delegates elected in all 56 primaries and caucuses collectively.

These delegates are different from the other 800 superdelegates, party leaders and elected officials who have the power to vote for any Presidential candidate and grip the balance of power at the convention this August in Denver. It is estimated that while Hillary Clinton has gained about 37 delegates in two states, Barack Obama has won around 23 in Oregon. There are still 43 more to be allocated in Oregon and Obama is said to in queue for most.  As per the newest tally provided by AP, Barack Obama has 1,940 delegates out from the total of 2,026 delegates required for the nomination. Addressing supporters and fans at lowa, Barack Obama said that they had managed to bring him to the brink of the Democratic nomination.
