US President elect Barack Obama has announced to close the prison facility for terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba. According to reports, the detainees of the prison are likely to be displaced to the Navy base at Charleston by the Pentagon. The Charleston prison needs to be revamped to accommodate the 250 Guantanamo inmates. Apart from it, the security features of the new prison also need to be improved. The government is also considering other military bases, including Camp Pendleton, California for the detainees.
According to internal sources, Obama administration is also likely to release some of the detainees besides conducting trail of the others in US court. With the change of prison, the prison laws are also supposed to undergo alteration. The Obama administration will have to create a new legal system to handle the classified information inherent in some of the most sensitive cases.
Report says that more than100 inmates are considered too dangerous to release. But the Bush administration did not have any evidences to prove them guilty. Barack Obama is trying to put end to the policies of Bush administration which captured and tortured many Guantanamo detainees in the name of investigations. However, Barack Obama will have to face tremendous challenges to implement the Guantanamo plan.
