Indian-American Rajiv Shah has been nominated by the US President Barack Obama as the chief of US Agency for International Development (USAID). The Administrator of USAID is the person responsible for all the non-military help by the US. This post had remained vacant ever since Obama administration became operational.

Shah, who is currently the Under Secretary for Research, Education and Economics and Chief Scientist at the US Department of Agriculture, would hold the highest ranking among the Indian Americans in the US Administration, provided the nomination is approved by the Congress.

"Rajiv brings fresh ideas and the dedication and impressive background necessary to help guide USAID as it works to achieve this important goal," said Obama while announcing his decision regarding the nomination of Shah.

The mission of USAID is to advance US' interests by strengthening our relationships abroad.

"I look forward to working with Rajiv in the months and years ahead," Mr Obama said.
