Bangladesh has plans to give its border force a boost by recruiting younger men. This step is being adopted by the nation in wake of the February mutiny which claimed the lives of 74 people.

The proposals which will be submitted before the cabinet include developing 15 new battalions and 60 Border Outposts along with the minimum age limit for recruitment to be set between 17 and 19. Currently, a person should be 23 if he wants to join Bangladesh border force.

The Bangladesh Rifles (BDR), which would be renamed Border Guard Bangladesh with a new logo and a new uniform, also wants its men to retire when they reach the age of 45.

Currently the retirement age is 57.

The proposals also suggest setting up four regional headquarters across the country to decentralise the BDR administrative hub from Pilkhana in Dhaka.

Final proposals for the reforms were submitted by BDR chief Major General Mohammed Mainul Islam to Home Secretary Abdus Sobhan Sikder.
